Hourly vs. Point-to-Point Corporate Car Service: Which One You Actually Need

Man in suit on phone by car, discussing hourly corporate car service.

Most people booking corporate transportation for the first time ask for a car to an address. That is point-to-point, it is the right answer about half the time, and the other half it quietly costs more and works worse.

Here is the difference, how each one is billed, and how to tell which your day actually needs. If you would rather just describe the day and be told which corporate car service fits, call 843-256-6098.

Point-to-point, in one line

One pickup, one destination, one flat rate agreed before you travel.

The vehicle collects you, takes you where you are going, and the engagement ends. Airport to hotel. Office to conference centre. Dinner reservation to home. The rate is fixed in advance and does not move because traffic was bad or because the meeting ran long, since the vehicle is released at the destination either way.

Hourly, sometimes called as-directed, in one line

You book the vehicle and the chauffeur for a block of time, and you direct where it goes.

The vehicle stays with you. It waits while you are in the meeting, moves when you move, and the itinerary can change during the day without renegotiating anything. You are buying availability rather than a specific journey.

When point-to-point is the right call

  • A single airport transfer with a known destination
  • One meeting, at one address, with a fixed end time
  • A guest arriving who needs to get to the hotel and nothing more
  • Anything where the next movement is far enough away that holding a vehicle would be waste

If the day has one journey in it, do not pay for the hours between.

When hourly is the right call

Multiple stops in a day. The moment there are three or more addresses, hourly is usually both simpler and better value than three separate point-to-point bookings, because you stop paying repositioning on each leg.

An end time you cannot predict. Board meetings, negotiations, plant visits and client dinners all have a scheduled end time and a real one. Hourly means the vehicle is outside when you finish rather than thirty minutes after you call.

Roadshows and multi-site days. If you are moving a group between sites on a schedule that will slip, from Georgetown up through Mount Pleasant, hourly is the only arrangement that absorbs the slip without a series of phone calls.

Client entertaining. When you are hosting, the difference between a car that is waiting and a car that has to be summoned is the difference between the evening feeling handled and feeling improvised. The same applies to discreet arrivals for DeBordieu private car service and the gated communities along the Waccamaw Neck.

Anything where the itinerary might change. This is the real test. If you can imagine saying “actually, can we stop at” during the day, book hourly.

How wait time works, and why it matters

This is where the two models separate most sharply.

On a point-to-point booking, the trip is priced as a journey. Reasonable wait at pickup is built in, but extended waiting is not, because the vehicle is scheduled for other work after you. If your meeting runs an hour long, the vehicle may not be available to wait, and the return leg becomes a fresh booking at whatever is available.

On an hourly booking, waiting is the point. The chauffeur waits because that is what you reserved. No clock-watching, no separate charge for the twenty minutes you spent finishing a conversation in the lobby.

The practical rule: if the schedule is uncertain, hourly is usually cheaper than point-to-point plus the cost of things going wrong.

Airport meet-and-greet versus curbside

Worth deciding separately from the hourly question, because it changes the arrival experience more than the vehicle does.

Curbside means the chauffeur is at the pickup area and you walk out to the vehicle. It is fast, it works well for travellers who know the airport, and it is the default.

Meet-and-greet means the chauffeur is inside, at baggage claim, with your name. It is the right choice for a client or executive you are hosting, for anyone arriving at an unfamiliar airport, and for international arrivals where clearance times are unpredictable. On all our airport transfers we track the flight either way, so a delay does not become a missed pickup.

What to tell whoever books it

If you are handing this to an assistant or a travel coordinator, give them four things and they can book it correctly without a second conversation:

  1. Number of passengers, and whether luggage is involved
  2. The first pickup address and time
  3. Whether the end time is fixed or open
  4. Whether there is more than one stop

Answers three and four decide hourly versus point-to-point on their own. Passenger count and luggage decide which of our executive vehicles goes out.
