If you are getting married in the Lowcountry between September and November, you picked the right season and the hardest one to plan transportation for. The weather turns civilised, the light gets long and gold, and every venue from Brookgreen Gardens to DeBordieu is booked solid. Which means the vehicles are too.

Fall in the Lowcountry is not spring with better weather
Three things make autumn different from the spring season, and all three change the transportation plan.
Daylight runs out earlier. A 5:30pm ceremony in April finishes in full light. The same ceremony in late October finishes in the dark, which moves your photography window earlier and compresses the gap between ceremony and reception. That gap is where guest shuttles run, and a shorter gap means more vehicles or a tighter cycle.
Hurricane season does not end until 30 November. Nobody wants to plan around it and everybody should. It rarely means cancellation, but it regularly means a road closure, a flooded stretch of Highway 17, or a guest whose flight into MYR moves by a day. A transportation plan with a stated wet-weather alternative is worth more in October than in any other month.
Guests travel further. Fall weddings pull more out-of-town guests than summer ones, because summer competes with the beach vacation. More out-of-town guests means more airport arrivals, more hotel-based guests who cannot drive themselves, and a bigger shuttle requirement than the headcount alone suggests.
The three transportation moments, in priority order
Almost every Lowcountry wedding has the same three, and couples routinely book them in the wrong order.
1. The guest shuttle
Book this first, and book it before the getaway car. It is the largest vehicle, the scarcest, and the one that affects the most people. A wedding where the couple arrives beautifully and forty guests drive themselves home after an open bar has solved the wrong problem.
2. The bridal party arrival
Second priority, and the one with the most flexibility. A bridal party of eight fits comfortably in vehicles that are far easier to secure than a 30-passenger shuttle. Book it once the shuttle is confirmed.
3. The getaway
Book last, and keep it simple. This is the shortest run of the night and the one guests photograph. What matters is that it is clean, on time, and that the driver knows exactly where the exit is at your venue.
How to size a guest shuttle without guessing
The number couples reach for is total guest count. The number that matters is how many guests need a ride, and how many trips the vehicle can make.
Start with the guests staying at hotels rather than driving in locally. For a fall Lowcountry wedding that is usually somewhere between half and two thirds of the list. Then work out your cycle. A 24-passenger vehicle running a fifteen-minute loop between a hotel on Ocean Highway and a venue in Pawleys Island can move roughly seventy people in an hour of continuous shuttling. The same vehicle running to a Charleston venue an hour and forty-five away can move twenty-four people, once.
That is why venue distance changes the vehicle count more than guest count does. Two 14-passenger vehicles running in parallel will usually beat one 30-passenger vehicle running alone, and they give you a second option if one is delayed. The booking timeline that actually works
Twelve to nine months out, once the venue and date are locked, get a transportation quote. Not a booking, a quote. It tells you what the day costs before the rest of the budget is committed, and it flags early if your venue has an access constraint that limits vehicle size.
Nine to six months out, book the guest shuttle. For a September, October or early November Saturday in the Lowcountry, this is the real deadline. Large vehicles on peak fall Saturdays are gone by spring.
Six to three months out, book the bridal party vehicle and the getaway. Confirm the venue’s actual vehicle access at the same time, because several Lowcountry venues have a gate, a bridge or a driveway that a 30-passenger vehicle cannot use.
Thirty days out, confirm the run sheet. Pickup addresses, times, contact numbers for two people who are not the couple, and the wet-weather plan.
One week out, reconfirm everything and send the final headcount. This is when late RSVPs turn a comfortable shuttle into a full one.
Venue notes that change the plan
Brookgreen Gardens has controlled access and a specific arrival route. Build in extra time and confirm the vehicle size the property will admit.
Litchfield Plantation and Pawleys Plantation both sit at the end of approach roads that are beautiful and narrow. Larger vehicles work but need a driver who has done it before.
DeBordieu Colony is a gated community. Every vehicle and every driver needs to be on the access list in advance, and that list closes before the day.

Charleston-side venues change the maths entirely. A Mount Pleasant or downtown Charleston wedding with Grand Strand guests is a long-distance transportation plan, not a shuttle plan.
What to have ready when you call
